If you're looking for something a little different, check out Juan's Mexicali in South Austin.  As the name implies, the menu is inspired by Mexicali, (the capital of Baja) with a "half-mexi" and "half-cali" approach to Mexican food.  They are located in the Grove at Southpark Meadows shopping center just south of Slaughter Lane, and on Brodie Lane.

This is a casual family restaurant with a fun atmosphere and absolutely wonderful food combinations.  It's no wonder that within the first year of opening in Austin, they have already opened a second location.  Our feeling... you'll be seeing more in other parts of the city, in the near future.

You may remember South Park for the music, and that's still a draw to what's now called The Grove at Southpark Meadows.  In fact, Juan's Mexicali has a large patio dining area right out back with a playground for the kids and the perfect spot to chill with some friends, have a drink and catch a live performance.

The food stands on it's own.  You'll find wraps, burritos, nachos, salads, quesadillas, and tacos.  But not the same ol' stuff you're used to.  For instance you might try one of our favorites... the California Turkey Wrap, with turkey, bacon, guacamole, lettuce, cheese and ranch dressing.  Sounds simple enough, but it is packed with flavor.  You may have also noticed that fish tacos are very popular right now.  And theirs is made with Tilapia, pico de gallo, lettuce, cheese and a tangy white sauce.

If you are one of those people who's always trying to make sure there will be plenty on your plate, order one of the burritos.  We tried the Carnitas (pork) Burrito, which was very good and really a full meal that would fill just about anyone all rolled up into a massive burrito.

One of the things we really liked about this place is the fact that their tortillas are made fresh in house, and you can tell.  Huge, hot and fresh tortillas that just might spoil you enough that you won't be satisfied with what you get elsewhere.
